George Green nasceu em Nottingham em 14 de julho de 1793. Seu pai foi primeiro padeiro em Nottingham e posteriormente um moleiro na vila de Sneinton nos arredores de Nottingham, na Inglaterra. Em 1828 Green publica seu “Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism”. Foi publicado em Nottigham, por subscrição privada, e cada um dos cinqüenta subscritores pagou 7 shillings e seis pences pela cópia. Entre eles estava Sir Edward Ffrench Bromhead, que era graduado em matemática em Cambridge e que posteriormente iria desempenhar um papel importante no caminho que Green seguiria.
